Birm is a filter medium for removing iron and manganese. It is an aluminum silicate coated with manganese dioxide. Birm acts as a catalyst to amplify the reaction between dissolved oxygen and iron compounds, changing Fe2+ to Fe3+ and forming iron hydroxide that is deposited and can be easily filtered.
